Kamil Gerald was in New York foster care for 15 years. She will be graduating with her MSW in May. The mother of three wonderful children, her goal is to help reform the Child Welfare System to make foster care a better place for our current and future foster youths.
When asked to recall her time with OFA, she replied, “OFA is the greatest blessing I have received from God above. Not only did they provide financial support, they also provided emotional support. It touched my heart how OFA was still there for me when I was in a homeless shelter, dealing with a domestic violence relationship, throughout my two difficult pregnancies that was causing me to miss classes in school. Throughout the whole ordeal, they have supported me when all I wanted to do was stay in school and finish my degree despite all that was going on in my life. I loved those care packages that I was getting every year, it really did came in handy especially when I did not have the money to get the supplies. What touched my heart the most was when they sent Christmas gifts to my house for all three of my children when I did not have a dime to get them any Christmas gifts. I cried because my children were still able to celebrate Christmas with their gifts. I loved OFA so much and I would do anything for them.”
